These Come From Trees Sticker

These Come From Trees Sticker
This is the sticker we're hoping can save a couple hundred thousand trees a year. Amazing how the right message at the right time can make the difference.

10,000 stickers and counting!

Hey everyone! We've been working on posting up stickers around the bay area, but wanted to share a fun stat with you.

We recently sent out our 10,000th sticker to a These Come From Trees project participant! That's awesome. Every time I put one up, I remember that that sticker on the paper towel dispenser will save more paper that day than it took to make, and in a whole year will save up to 100 pounds of paper--one whole tree.

It saves the store owner money, saves the earth some trees, and helps educate each other in our day to day when it's easy to forget where things really come from.

Thanks for making this a success!

I think what you're doing is great.

i also think this is great... and i am considering buying some stickers, but just for arguments' sake--what are the stickers made of? i realize that the actual sticker is probably vinyl, but what is the backing made from?

please respond: es660@nyu.edu

Hi there!

They're not actually vinyl. They are themselves made of laminated paper. So yes, they are made of paper, but save as much paper as they take to make in 3 days of paper towels savings. The lamination is so they aren't marred by cleaning liquids.

Hey Pete,

Congrats on the 10, 000 – keep 'em coming. New pictures look great too.

Great Stuff!

This is a good idea to make folks less complacent about the stuff we use, but I don’t think stickers will work. The alternative would be to instal a roller towel system in the bathroom but they accumulate germs and end up the colour of carbon. Or we could dry our hands on the backs of our jeans. Or stop washing our hands altogether. We could easily replace paper cups with pottery. There could be a tall wire construction collection point for pottery cups at bus/train stations.

Coral

some one beat me to it. are they made from cellulose fiber? Still a great idea. Make us think. We stopped buying certain paper products at our house. We found we just didn't need them. In the kitchen anyway.

Hi,

We could replace toilet paper. Bring your own leaves to the bathroom. And there’s an increasing problem with drought across the world, whether it be man-made or part of a natural cycle.

http://tinyurl.com/35upgj

We could replace the gallon of water used with each flush. We could use sand or earth - one turn of the handle could scoop the old sand into a covered holding tank outside. At the same time, the same metal scoop could refill the bowl with fresh sand.

Regards,
Coral

hey pete -
i'd love to spread some stickers here on the east coast too, but i'm wondering whether there is a politeness issue. do you think it is okay to place stickers on paper towel dispensers in restaurants/bars/etc.? or should we ask first?

This is a great idea and it’s awesome to see how many others are getting involved.

Anonymous #1,

I refer you to my comment at the top of the thread, where I describe the cost/ benefit of this project.

You see, there's this principle in economics, where if the benefit you stand to gain far outweighs the cost, it's called a "worthwhile investment" of resources.

In this case, to the extent that in a year's time, one small sticker can save 100 pounds of paper, it's a similarly "worthwhile investment."

I appreciate your commentary, but in the future, please do your best to read the whole comments stream before dropping a sarcasm bomb. Sound like a deal?

I think it's kind of ironic that you're promoting less paper use by using paper.

Anonymous said...

WOW! Just amazing how we can waste everything!

DOOR3 Business Applications, Inc. said...

I think you are definitely off-setting the carbon footprint of the stickers you are creating by getting people to use paper based products more conscientiously. And, in the process, you are getting people to consider the impact of what are typically mundane, non-self reflective actions. Keep up the good work!

Hello I have been really interested in the project and since its your idea I was wondering if you would mind if I do the same thing in my country, Colombia, in spanish stickers with the same spirit (no affiliation with you or anything). What do you think ?

Hey Pete,

Keep up the good work and don't worry too much about the negative comments that come in. The main thing is that you are doing your bit for the world (unlike the lot that just blabbers and does nothing). Good Luck.

nice, how can i have something like that in romania?

Pete Kazanjy said...

To all the people who are asking how this can happen in their country / language: we have released the image and catchphrase under a Creative Commons license, so you're free to use it however you want, as long as its attributed back to this project, and is non-commercial.

If you think something like this can make a difference in your country, please run with it!

This is a great idea. One of my close friends would find this very interesting. My only worry would be that people might actually ignore the stickers being there. Alot of people out there couldn't care less about trees or the environment. It would be nice if there was a way to change the way people think.

I saw one of your stickers for the first time yesterday at Smith Rock State Park in Oregon. I think they're a great idea. Keep it up.

i admire the way you're trying to put out the cutting of trees. but there's lot more than jus papers, papers and papers.i dont totally disagree that papers are forming a major part, but trees are being used for a lot of other reasons - like laying roads, for medicinal researches, for providing space for the (new)bigger vehicles to run on the road. now if you are particularly keen on paper(made out of trees), why dont you do something using the sugarcane waste which is also being made into paper at a similar price(selling price, i dont know about the cost price). now you can support these causes which are equally noble as yours. and i've actually used cane paper and its good too. so why dont ya guys give it a try??

These come from trees stickers? What a worthless use of trees, to make those stupid stickers! Get a freaking life and go do somehting that will make a difference!

clare said...

Well, can consider the system to separate water into white water, grey water and black water. white water means the water which is clean and can be drank and wash cloth and dishes and so on. The used water after dishes and clothes washing can be considered as grey water and can be used in our toilet system to flash away all the unwanted. At last, the grey water will become black water where we can no longer use it and can only be throw away into the drain.

Anonymous said...

Am I missing the point here? How exactly do these stickers save trees? Do you really think a sticker saying 'these come from trees' is going to make any significant impact atall? I'd like to see the evidence backing up your claim that every sticker saves a tree. I think it's ineffective and a waste of your time, you might save a tree with every sticker, but it would take quite a lot more stickers to make any real difference. By 2010 it's supposed that there will be 240 million Cubic Meters of forest cut down per year. I don't know how many tree's that is, but it means you have an awful lot more stickers to put up.

I would highly encourage people visiting the blog to go ahead and read further than this single post to understand the whole project.

Many questions like "How do these reduce paper towel use, and thus save trees?" are answered other places on this blog. I would recommend the "Welcome Post" that's linked to at the very top of every page.

Timothy, I fundamentally disagree with your argument that something that may not have an immediately large impact is not worth doing. Many important things start out small, from causes, to companies, to ideas.

And I suppose that if you're concerned that a large amount of deforestation will be happening, we should get cracking on reducing use where it can most easily be done, right?

I am in a marketing class for my Bachelors degree and am very impressed with the way you are marketing such a major environmental issue. I think the sticker is eye catching and a great way to reemphasize to people of all ages that paper products come from trees. Many times we take for granted something as small as a paper towel, and at what cost it takes to make these items. I applaud you in your efforts and keep up the good work.

This is a great project and a very original idea. Congrats on you 10000th sticker by the way. It is great to know that there are so many people out there who take the environmental problems so seriously and do something about it.

It think it really makes people more aware. It is all in our hands and we can all make a difference.

Hello, Pete.

My organization is very involved in developing and supporting programs that improve our environment. As part of the hospital’s “Earth Day is Every Day” event on Tuesday, April 22, I’d like to purchase 5 packs of 100stickers and place one sticker on each paper towel dispenser located throughout the facility to create awareness and educate employees, patients and guests alike about protecting our planet.

The only trouble I find is that your site only allows me the option to purchase one pack of one hundred stickers at a time. Please advice on what to do in order to place more than one order on the same ticket. Thank you in advance!

My mistake, I accidentally sent two posts. Both have the same message though.

This is a great idea. Do you think I should ask before I post stickers over the paper towel dispensers in my school?

Where is the concept that the the stickers helps save up to "100 pounds of paper every year"? What is that based on? It's ironic that something that is meant to save trees comes from trees.

If I had a stack of those stickers I'd put one in every public bathroom I entered. Its not like it's very big and it's not advertisement or offensive. Nobody would even know you put it there. There's a big chance if you asked they'd say no or say they have to ask their manager... I'd just do it : )

Your blog is very informative. Eating mindfully has been very hard for people these days. It's all because of their busy schedules, work or lack of focus on themselves. As a student I must admit that I have not been eating mindfully but because of this I will start now. It could help me enjoy my food and time alone. Eating mindfully may help me be aware of healthy food and appreciating food.
